ABOUT

Mission statement

South of the Salt Corporation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the stewardship and preservation of the property located at 4848 S Central. Our mission is to ensure the long-term health and vitality of this space while providing a safe, welcoming, and supportive facility for hosting 12-step recovery meetings.

History

South of the Salt began in January 1968. At the time, a meeting was being held in the home of Ruth Welch. As attendance grew, it became clear that more space was needed—and with no meeting halls in South Phoenix, Ruth’s brother began searching for a suitable location. He discovered an old farm at 4848 S. Central Avenue, which included a yellow house on the property. The group purchased the site, and the first official meeting was held there on January 6, 1968.

As the years went on, the meetings at 4848 S. Central continued to grow. By 1988, the old yellow house had deteriorated significantly, and it was ultimately torn down to make way for the current large meeting hall. The new building was a true labor of love—built by the hands of its members and made possible through  fundraising efforts to gather the necessary materials. While the building has experienced its share of ups and downs over the decades, it has remained a steadfast refuge and is the oldest meeting hall in the Valley.

Thousands of us affected by alcoholism and drug addiction have found a safe haven within its walls—a place of hope, healing, and fellowship.
